Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22

October 1982

FROM THE EAST

Brethren,

On Saturday, September 18, 1982 the Grand Master of Masons in Virginia made his Official Visit to Masonic Districts 1A, 1B, & 54. A Committee composed of the Senior Warden, Brother Lawrence M. Callahan, the Junior Warden, Brother Archibald W. Lyon, and myself presented a certificate to the Grand Master regarding our Lodges "resolution of intent" to sponsor a Double Room at the Masonic Home of Virginia. The Grand Master expressed his gratitude to the Lodge that evening, and I have since received a letter from him. I am happy to report that he is very pleased and has asked me to thank each and every member of our Lodge, on his behalf. To his message, I also add my own personal note of satisfaction and appreciation to you for having passed this resolution. As of this date, we have collected almost $11,500 toward our goal of $27,000. Your generous response to this worthy endeavor is most gratifying. May God bless you for your kindness. Any Brother who would like to help out with the remaining $15,500 of the goal may do so by sending his tax-deductible gift to the Secretary.

On Saturday, October 9, 1982, our Lodge will celebrate the annual occasion of "Ladies Night". This event will be held in the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. Dinner will be served in the Assembly Hall at 6:46 PM and will be followed by entertainment in the auditorium at 7:30 PM. The menu will consist of an appetizer, salad, Steaks from the Bar-Be-Cue, baked potatoe with sour cream & chives (or butter), vegetable, garlic bread, coffee & tea, and desert. I am pleased to announce that, by special arrangement, we have been able to engage the Merry Makers Rhythm Band to entertain us. This group has a cast of approximately 30 performers, and are an absolute delight. All officers have tickets. Donation $7.50.

Also for Ladies Night, our friends from William L. Elkins Lodge No. 646, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Liberty Lodge, in Beverly Massachusetts will be present as our special guests. I am looking forward to this gala event as we honor our Ladies, and hope to see you there.

At our Stated Communication of October 14, 1982 we will receive Worshipful Brother Harry Grant Lutz, the District Instructor of Work for Masonic District 1A. On this same evening we will have an election to appoint a representative from the Lodge to the George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association. This election is to fill the vacancy created when our former representative resigned. The term of this office will expire in February 1983.

On Monday, October 18, 1982 we will travel to Potomac Lodge No. 5 in the District of Columbia to pay them a Fraternal Visit as they celebrate "Virginia Night". We will take the Silver Trowel with us for display purposes at their meeting. We plan to carpool from the parking lot of the Memorial. Any Brother who would like to go along should meet us in the parking lot. We plan to depart at 6:30 PM.

There will be a Called Communication of Alexandria-Washington Lodge at Pythagoras Lodge No. 123, in Baltimore Maryland, at 7:30 PM, on Thursday, October 21, 1982, for the purpose of conferring the Master Masons Degree on one of our candidates, while using our special robes arid costumes. Pythagoras Lodge No. 123 meets in the Doric Room, on the 4th floor of the Grand Lodge Building located at 225 N. Charles Street in Baltimore. We will carpool there. We plan to leave the parking lot of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial at 6:00 PM in order to arrive in time. I would like to take as many Brethren of our Lodge as who would like to go. The Brethren of Pythagoras Lodge need to know how many of us will be coming in order to plan effectively. Please contact me at an early date if you plan to attend.

The Officers and Members of Alexandria-Washington Chapter, Order of DeMolay have extended a very special invitation to each and every member of our Lodge to attend the Installation of Officers on Saturday, October 2nd at 7:30 PM. This function will be held in the North Room of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. The installation is an "open" affair which means that our families and friends are also welcome. Please join me as I go to congratulate them on this joyous occasion.

At the Stated Meeting of Thursday, October 28, 1982, we will conduct any necessary business, celebrate Masonic Birthdays and have a short Educational Program. The Educational Program will be delivered by Brother Tom Sjoblom.

On Saturday, October 30, 1982, at 7:30 PM, there will be a Called Communication of Alexandria-Washington Lodge held in the Luray Caverns located in Luray, Virginia. The meeting is called for the special purpose of paying tribute to George Washington during this 250th Anniversary Year of George Washington's birth. and in honor of the occasion, to confer the degree of a Master Mason on one of our own candidates, while using our special robes and costumes. We will rent at least one bus for transportation. All officers have bus tickets. Donation $8.00. We have also made arrangements for a buffet dinner at the restaurant near the Caverns. The cost of the dinner is $7.00 (to be paid at the door). The busses will depart the George Washington Masonic National Memorial parking lot at 3:00 PM in order to arrive in time for a 5:00 PM dinner.

The Secretary has asked me to announce that the Alexandria-Washington Lodge Bicentennial Commemorative Medals will be mailed out. to those who requested delivery by mail, on November 10th. Those who did not pay for the mailing, may pick up their Medals commencing with the Stated Meeting of November 11th. There are still a few of the numbered series available for those members who have not yet placed their order. Also, there is still a quantity of the unnumbered series available. Sincerely and fraternally,
