GEORGE WASHINGTON
Worshipful Master of Alexandria Lodge
1788-1789
O great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the winds, and whose breath gives life to all the world, hear me! I am small and weak; I need your strength and wisdom. Let me walk in beauty, and make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset. Make my hands respect the things you have made and my ears sharp to hear your voice. Make me wise so that I may understand the things you have taught my people. Let me learn the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock. I seek strength, not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy...myself. Make me always ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes. So when life fades, as the fading sunset, may my spirit come to you without shame.

In 1799 Alexandria Lodge No.22 gave a banquet in honor of George Washington's Birthday. He attended, was eulogized and responded. On the 14th of the following December: Washington died. Every year since, except for the period of the War Between the States, this Lodge has observed his birthday.
Tonight we continue the custom; it is the one hundred eightieth occa- slon.
It is my observation; that throughout the course of human existence very few men control destiny. Fewer yet, are remembered beyond the turn- ing of a page in a book of history.
"To add brightness to the sun or glory to the name of Washington is impossible"; yet the recounting of the attributes ofhis greatness can not be repeated too often. His life will be an inspiration to men until the end of time.
I therefore welcome you to this two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the birth of this great man; and our chief aim will be accomplished if Washington shall be glorified again and our love ofGod, of Country and of our Fellow-Man be rekindled.
Sincerely and fraternally,
LEO ALOYSIUS SENTIGER, JR.

We extend our thanks to Brother Dr. Dean B. Thomas for giving of his time and talents in providing entertainment for us, our ladies and guests in the auditorium. ¤ We also extend our thanks to Bethel No. 4, I.O.J.D. and Alexandria-Washington Chapter Demolay for preparing and serving our dinner. |
Washington is the mightest name on earth -long since mightest in the cause of civil liberty; still mightest in moral reformation. On that name no eulogy is expected. It can not be. To add brightness to the sun, or glory to the name of Washington, is alike impossible. Let none attempt it. In solemn awe we pronounce the name, and in its naked deathless splendor leave it shining on. -Abraham Lincoln |
