Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22

June 1984

FROM THE EAST

Ties of friendship and brotherly love were renewed with our friends of Liberty Lodge (MA) over the weekend of May 25-27. This association has continued through the years since 1910±. Also, earlier in the month, our brothers of Elkins Lodge No. 646 (PA) extended warmest hospitality as we joined with them for their Ladies' Night on May 5. These are among the rewards and joys that Masonry brings to its adherents. Alexandria-Washington Lodge is privileged to share similar mutual relationships with many Lodges near and far. The universality of Masonry is a demonstrated fact in the regular life of our Lodge. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

The first event on the calendar for June is the observance of the Feast of Saint John the Baptist by attendance at church services of the Washington Street United Methodist Church, at 113 South Washington Street, on Sunday, June 10th. A cordial invitation has been extended by Reverend Robert T. Knox, Pastor. Washington Street Church is noted for its friendliness and for its musical program as well as for its good preaching. A section will be reserved for members of the Lodge and their families. Plan to come by 10:45. Services begin at eleven o'clock.

Our first Stated in June is on Flag Day, and has been declared Patriotic Night. The National Sojourners will present the program which will be of interest to all. It will be presented while the Lodge is at refreshment and so will be open to families and friends. So bring your families. They may relax in the auditorium while we conduct our business. The program will be at about 8:30. Refreshments will be served following. Let us have our best turnout of the year!

On the second Stated, June 28th, we will honor our brethren of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. Our own Lodge brother, David Kruger, 33°, is Deputy for Virginia. Speaker for the evening will be our esteemed brother, William G. Sizemore, Rear Admiral, USN, Retired and Chairman of Education and Americanism for the AASR, SJ. Come and bring a brother.

The date of our picnic has been changed to June 30. Please note and plan accordingly. Note also that it is in Areas C-1, 2 and 3 at Fort Hunt. Bring the whole family. Bring a widow of the Lodge. This is a time for old fashioned relaxation and good fellowship. Food service will begin at two o'clock.

Fraternally,

Archibald W. Lyon
Worshipful Master

FLAG DAY - June 14. "Resolved, that the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation." Act of the Continental Congress, June 14, 1777.

HATS OFF, THE FLAG IS PASSING BY

Hats off! Along the street there comes
A blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums,
A flash of color beneath the sky:
Hats off! The flag is passing by!
Sign of a nation, great and strong
To ward her people from foreign wrong:
Pride and glory and honor, all
Live in the colors to stand or fall.
Blue and crimson and white it shines,
Over the steel-tipped, ordered lines.
Hats off! The colors before us fly:
But more than the flag is passing by.
Hats off! Along the street there comes
A blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums;
And loyal hearts are beating high:
Hats off! The flag is paasing by!
