Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22

March 1988

FROM THE EAST

Brethren,

It was indeed delightful to see our entire line of officers in attendance at the Annual Grand Lodge Communication in Richmond to honor our Past Master, Most Worshipful Don Robey, as he completed a very successful year in the Grand East. I am sure that I speak for the entire Lodge Family when I say, congratulations Donny, on a job well done.

The Ladies and Brethren of the craft afforded our Lodge great honor when they gathered to welcome the new Grand Master, Most Worshipful Glover Hunter Jones, Jr. to Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22, for the activities commemorating Illustrious Brother George Washington's Birthday Celebration. From all reports, the events of the day were very well received.

In behalf of the Lodge, I want to thank all who assisted in the preparations for, and implementation of, the above two events.

The month of March will begin with the first of our fraternal visits to the District 1A Lodges, when on the 1st., we will pay an "Official Visit" to Skidmore Daylight Lodge No. 237.

On the 10th., we look forward to a visit from Wor. Bro. Harry Grant Lutz, District Instructor of Work for Masonic District 1A. Worshipful Brother Lutz has been a great help to me as I have sojourned toward the East of AW#22, and as always, I am sure he will be willing to respond to our continuing efforts to improve the work of our beloved Masonic Fraternity.

On the 17th., we will pay an "Official Visit" to our "Temple" neighbors, Andrew Jackson Lodge No. 120. It is always a pleasure to visit with AJ#120, and I am sure the Brethren of AW#22 will want to come out on this occasion to show our support for Wor. Bro. Pete Melvin and his officers.

The 24th., will be an important evening for the Lodge when we officially welcome the new District Deputy Grand Master, Right Worshipful James Harold Hayes. Rt. Wor. Jim has been very active in Masonry over the years, and deserves our continued support. Come on out and hear of his plans for the year. I am sure he will have an interesting message for us.

Fraternally,
William A. Jones
Worshipful Master

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHT

200 YEARS AGO - 1788

The year 1788 was a year of transition for the Lodge. In March, the Lodge was moved out of Wise's Tavern where it had spent its early years. The move was necessitated due to the tavern becoming a public resort, thereby attracting strangers and travelers, and thus not secure from intrusion. Initially, the Brethren secured rooms at William Page's and later, in August of the same year, they moved the Lodge to Joseph Greenway's.
