Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22

October 1988

FROM THE EAST

Brethren,

Everything is shipshape for one of the big events of our year which is coming up this month when we will celebrate "Ladies Night". As always, we look forward to honoring the Ladies of Alexandria-Washington Lodge, and to receiving the brethren and ladies from our sister lodge, William L. Elkins Lodge No. 646 of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The AW#22 Ladies Night program this year is perhaps a little unique, and is set for Saturday, October 8th, when we will be taking a dinner cruise on the "Spirit of Washington" out of Pier #4, on Main Avenue S.W. Washington, D.C. Donations are being accepted for the event at $30.00 per person, and will include a three hour cruise, a sumptuous feast of seafood, beer and chicken with a selection of vegetables and salads, rolls and deserts, and a "Salute to Broadway" revue. We have one deck reserved for the Lodge, which will accommodate 160 persons. Dress will be casual so that we may have a relaxing evening of fellowship together. Call any Lodge Officer for reservations. Reservation tickets will be collected at dockside at which time you will receive a "Spirit of Washington" boarding pass. It being a Saturday, there should be ample street parking spaces available, and there is a large parking lot adjacent to the dock.

ALL ABOARD! Reservations are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. You may have already missed the boat! FINAL CALL!

On our first Stated Communication, we will honor the "Appendant Bodies" when RW Dick Mathews will prewent a program on "Freemasonry in Action". We will also have the Tall Cedars with us, and Sam Atkinson will present a very fine film on MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY. Brethren, this is one of the best films I have seen in recent years, and it deserves your attention. Additionally, we will have a short. "Cross of Honor Ceremony" to honor two of our own AW#22 Lodge Brothers who will receive the second highest honor the Order of DeMolay can bestow on a brother. Please come out on the 13th and help your Lodge pay tribute to our appendant bodies of Masonry, and our honored brothers.

Our second Stated Communication on the 27th, will be devoted to "Founders Night" when F.M. "Buddy" Shoemaker, PDDGM will present a very informative program on the "Formation of the Grand Lodge", and how the founding month of October has been used to link support for our most charitable enterprise, the Masonic Home of Virginia.

Fraternally,
William A. Jones
Worshipful Master

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHT

100 YEARS AGO - 1888

At the October meeting, Alexandria-Washington Lodge received an appeal from the Grand Secretary's office for assistance and funds to be sent to the Masonic Relief Committee in Jacksonville, Florida; The fraternity of that city were in sore distress from the ravages of yellow fever.

This was followed by a letter from the Grand Master requesting support due to the prevailing epidemic.

Alexandria-Washington Lodge made a sizable donation. Details may be found in the proceedings, page 11, under Florida letter of Sept. 12th.
