Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22

April 1989

FROM THE EAST

Brethren,

For your advance planning, please note that the William Hiram Wood Area School will be held on Friday, 5 May at 7:30 pm and Saturday, 6 May at 8:00 am at the Arlington Masonic Temple.

On the 5th of this month, our Jobies of Bethel No. 22 are honoring Master Masons. Let us show our interest and regard for Masonic youth by attending this meeting. As a Past Associate Bethel Guardian, I can assure you that they will be pleased and honored by our presence.

You will note that Wardens Night, originally scheduled for the 13th has been rescheduled for 28 September. This change was made to accommodate our traditional visitor and speaker for this occasion, the Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Virginia.

As is customary, the Stated Communication on Charter Night will open in the Replica Lodge Room. Our Past Master, Wor. Bro. Oliver Lloyd Onion, will be the speaker for the evening.

Fraternally,
Frederic W. Andersen
Worshipful Master

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHT - 200 Years Ago

April 5th 1789 - Mount Vernon - George Washington received first word of the election results. Congress had voted 69 for Washington and 34 for John Adams. (We will always wonder what George and Martha talked about that night.)

NOTE: On page 159 of "Washington: The Man & Mason" (2nd Edition), Washington received all 69 votes cast by the 10 states present for President. Adams received 34 votes for Vice President.

April 15th, 1791 - The Hon. Daniel Carroll and the Hon. David Steuart arrived in Town to superintend the fixing of the first boundary stone at the south corner of the Federal District. The Mayor, with the members of the Masonic Lodge, met at Wise's Tavern at three o'clock to wait on the Commissioners. There they dined and after drinking a glass of wine to the following sentiment, "May the stone which we are about to place in the ground remain an immovable monument of the wisdom and unanimity of North America," the company proceeded to Jones Point.
