Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22

July 1989

FROM THE EAST

Brethren,

At the first Stated Communication in July, we will nominate and elect a Trustee to take the place of Wor. Bro. Ed Gondella whose term expires in 1991. The Trustees will meet on the 17th and all members of the Lodge are not only welcome bur encouraged to attend.

The Southwest Masonic School is not only a valuable and effective ritual school but it is also a lot of fun. If you can arrange the time, it would be well worth your time to attend. Wives and families are welcome and the lodging is free. All who may be interested may contact Wor. Bro. Jim Stone or myself.

Our wandering Brethren having returned from England on the 15th, we hope to be regaled with tales of the trip at the second Stated Communication. We will open and close as quickly as possible and the families will be invited in. We will then celebrate Masonic Birthdays and hear about the trip. Afterwards, there will be suitable refreshments in the dining room.

Please note that we are conferring two Master Mason Degrees this month -- eleven days apart. Please attend and be willing to take part. In fact, the Senior Deacon would not object to volunteers. This is the most important day in a Masonic career and we owe it to our candidates.

Fraternally,
Frederic W. Andersen
Worshipful Master

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHT - 200 Years Ago

July 27, 1789 - Congress created the Department of Foreign Affairs. The name was changed on September 15th to the Department of State. The President, in declining to appoint his nephew Bushrod Washington to the office, wrote, "My political conduct in nominations, even if I were uninfluenced by principles, must be exceedingly circumspect and proof against just criticism; for no slip will pass unnoticed that can be improved into a supposed partiality for friends or relations." Washington nominated Thomas Jefferson to be Secretary of State.
