Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22

August 1993

Master's Message

My Brethren:

On August 12, we will have Family Night with Andrew Jackson Lodge No. 120. This will again be an occasion to bring our families and friends together to share in Masonic fellowship. We will open in the North Lodge Room and receive Wor. William H. Consla our District Education Officer. After closing lodge, Wor. Bro. Consla will speak on the historic ties between the Washington and Jackson lodges. Following his presentation, we will have refreshments including homemade ice cream and fresh watermelons. Remember, family and friends are welcome and should arrive by 8:30pm for the program in the lodge.

On August 26, we will receive an official visit from the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia. Most Wor. George R. Adams, Grand Master, has honored this lodge in accepting our invitation and the entire Grand Lodge line will enter by formal procession for this event. Most Wor. Brother Adams will present an address concerning our lodge's historic role within the District of Columbia. Please attend and support our sister Grand Lodge, as we play tribute to our Masonic heritage in the nation's capital.

With over eleven candidates working in the various degrees and more on the way, we will continue to have degree work throughout the rest of the year. Brethren, please attend the called meetings, as it helps support our candidates during this precious time when they need inspiration from informed brethren. If you would like to instruct or become a mentor, please see our Junior Deacon and personally involve yourself in the lodges activities. It will be appreciated.

Sincerely and fraternally,

Claude H. Harris, Jr.
Worshipful Master

August 10, 1793 - Dr. Elisha Cullen Dick, US Surgeon General and Worshipful Master of the Alexandria Lodge No. 22, informed Washington that Yellow Fever was breaking out in Philadelphia and strongly advised him to move the family back to Mount Vernon. Martha did not want to go, but finally left with the children on September 22, 1793 just after the fever started spreading throughout the cit)' and the water was believed to be contaminated. Washington would follow later.
