Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22

June 1994

FROM THE EAST

Brethren,

June! Already, half the year behind us! Where has it gone?

We welcome Most Wor. Floren Lamont Quick in his new position as Secretary of our Lodge. At our Stated Communication on May 12, "Monty" was unanimously elected by the Brethren and subsequently installed by Most Wor. Donald M. Robey. We appreciate his willingness to serve and look forward to working together. Monty is active in many of the appendant Masonic bodies, and has brought a lot to our Lodge in the three years since he affiliated from Yokusuka Lodge in Japan.

Other changes in the roster of Lodge Officers include Bro. Thomas Gayle Little as Junior Steward and Wor. "Jack" Canard as Assistant Secretary. Bro. Little, one of our newest Master Masons, answered our "Help Wanted Ad" from last month's Lodge Bulletin and is already making his presence felt in "providingfor the Brethren at refreshment..." In the past, Bro. Canard was instrumental in setting up the Lodge's data system for membership records. He will be helping Bro. Quick in maintaining and upgrading these data systems.

At our first Stated Communication on June 9, we will mark Flag Day five days early and honor our National Emblem. Heroes of '76, of the National Sojourners will present the pageant, "Building the Flag." The evening will be dedicated to our youth -- Job's Daughters and DeMolays. Open to ladies, guests and Degree Candidates.

Somehow, in the order of business on May 12, we neglected to vote on the proposal to change the Lodge By-Laws as provided to each of you in our May Trestleboard. Without fail, we will vote on this proposal at our June 9 Stated Communication. This month we celebrate the Feast of St. John the Baptist, one of the Patron Saints of modem Freemasonry .Lodges weren't always dedicated to the "Holy Saints John." Come to our Gadsby's Tavern meeting and learn more! Note that this, our second Stated Communication has been rescheduled to Friday, so that it rightly falls on St. John's Day, June 24. Tickets are $15.00; available from the Lodge Officers.

I continue to stress our commitment to the Masonic Child ID Program. Alexandria-Washington Lodge will be on hand at the Child ID Program at the Alexandria Red Cross Waterfront Festival, June 11-12, where we expect to "ID" more than 1000 children. Plan to participate with us. Say "Yes" when you're called.

In recent months, Alexandria-Washington Lodge has received Applications for Affiliation from a number of out-of-state Brethren. We are honored that these Brethren have chosen to affiliate with our Lodge, and we are particularly honored to welcome into our midst, members from several Pennsylvania and Ohio Lodges. Those two jurisdictions permit their members to affiliate with only one lodge in addition to their home lodge and these Brethren have chosen to "spend" this valuable privilege by affiliating with Alexandria-Washington Lodge! Welcome!

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Frank R. Dunaway, Jr.
Worshipful Master

REMINDERS & PLANNING DATES

MASONIC FUNERAL SERVICES: One of our most important duties as a Master Mason is to join with our Brethren " ...to offer to the memory of our deceased Brother the last tribute of our affections, thereby demonstrating the sincerity of our past esteem..."Our Lodge has been fortunate in that we have not lost a large number of Brethren this year. All of us have many personal commitments, but when you are asked to attend a Brother's funeral, this should take a high priority. Please make every effort to demonstrate that you remember your obligations to the living.

HELP NEEDED: Our Tiler's position is open and we need to fill it...This important function for our Lodge requires a dependable individual who has a strong desire to uphold the appearance of Alexandria-Washington Lodge and who will attend all Stated and Called Communications, Funerals, Official Visits, etc. If you would like to serve as Tiler, please call the Worshipful Master at 703-548-0318.

1994 DUES CARDS: The Secretary still has some 1994 Dues Cards. Look in your wallet and see if he still has yours. If you find that the card in your wallet says "1993", take a minute to write your check for $35.00 and send it to our Secretary. He would be pleased to send your 1994 card to you. Or, better still, think about Life Membership in Perpetuity! See below.

LADIES AND GUESTS INVITED TO SPECIAL PROGRAM - July 14: At our Stated Communication on July 14, we will have a short business meeting, closing the Lodge by 8:15 pm. At that time, we will invite in our ladies and guests and be treated as the Cherrydale Players present "A Rose on the Altar" -- outside a tiled lodge for only the second time in their history. If you have ever seen this play, you'll want to share it with your lady and/or guest. If you have not seen it, here's your chance. Ladies, non-masons and Degree Candidates are particularly welcome.

REID JAMES SIMMONS MASONIC SCHOOL - July 20-23: At Fork Union Military Academy. Plan to attend this 3 day opportunity to brush up on ritual floor work, learn a lecture, get a certificate or just enjoy Masonic fellowship. Call Wor. Jim Stone (703-323-8334) for information, reservations.

Come along and enjoy this wonderful weekend of Masonic fellowship. Call Rt. Wor. Bob Swiger (703-683-6971) and Wor. Wardell Thomas (703-765-4649) for reservations. Next planning meeting for those making the trip -- July 31 at the LODGE PICNIC.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP IN PERPETUITY: The LMIP program provides an opportunity to help ensure a stable income for our Lodge in years to come. The LMIP one-time payment for A-W 22 is approximately 16 times our dues (some odd pennies for insurance makes it $563.52). Your LMIP contribution endows your Lodge with an annuity equal to your dues amount forever. See the Secretary.

THE MASONIC BENEFIT FUND was established in 1925 to provide a means whereby member Master Masons can honor their Obligation to contribute to the relief of a Widow of a deceased Brother Master Mason, or such beneficiary as predetermined by the member. The Masonic Benefit Fund is not an insurance policy. Membership in the Fund is open to any Master Mason who is a member of a Lodge in any of the nine Masonic Districts in Northern Virginia and who is under 60 years of age. For information see Bro. George F. Harrington (703-416-7280).
