Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22

July 1998

Master's Message

My Brethren:

This month marks the 150th Anniversary of the Cornerstone Laying of the Washington Monument. To commemorate this event, Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22 will assist the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia in the Sesquicentennial Celebration of the Washington Monument on Saturday, July 18. The reenactment will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Sylvan Theater on the grounds of the Washington Monument. You will not want to miss this event. Each Grand Jurisdiction in the United States will be represented.

In light of this celebration, Most Worshipful Stewart Wilson Miner, Past Grand Master of Virginia in 1974 and the current Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia, will be sharing a talk on The Washington Monument 1848-1998, at our first Stated Communication, July 9.

There are still several seats available for our Official Visit to Liberty Lodge in Beverly, Massachusetts on August 14-16. On the morning of August 14, we will take a bus to Beverly and return the evening of August 16. The cost is $75 per person and lodging will be provided by the members of Liberty Lodge. If you would like to join this trip, please contact Wor. Wardell Thomas at (703) 765-4649. For those going, there will be an organizational meeting Sunday, July 19, at 2:00 p.m. at the Lodge.

It being the 222nd Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Rt. Wor. John Price "Jack" Riddell will speak on Patriotism at our second Stated Communication, July 23.

The Lodge Picnic will be Sunday, July 26, from 1-4 p.m. at the Alexandria U. S. Coast Guard Station (7323 Telegraph Road, Alexandria). This year's Picnic will be held jointly with Andrew Jackson Lodge and will feature food, fun, and games for all ages. There is a large playground for children, so bring your entire family, friends, and neighbors.

To the anonymous member who generously established a Widow's Fund for the Lodge, I would like to take this opportunity to express the Lodge's appreciation. This fund is designed to take care of the personal needs of our widows. If you wish to make contributions to this fund, contact our Widow's Committee Chairman, Wor. Wardell Thomas.

Sincerely and fraternally,

Philip J. Hays
Worshipful Master
