My Brethren:
At our first Stated Communication September 10, Most Wor. Donald Maynard Robey, Past Grand Master of Masons in Virginia in 1987, and Past Master of Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22 in 1975, will speak on the topic of the Origin of the Naming of the Grand Lodge of Virginia.
Regretfully, I have accepted the resignation of our Senior Warden, Joel Scott Armstrong due to increased vocational obligations. In consequence, elections will be held for the office of Senior Warden and any subsequent vacant offices at our first Stated Communication on September 24. The new officers will be installed following the elections.
We will celebrate Ladies Night with Wm. L. Elkins Lodge No. 646 from Philadelphia on September 19 (Please see enclosed invitation.). A hospitality suite will open at 1:00 pm at the Holiday Inn Eisenhower to welcome our guests. Dinner will begin at 7:00 pm at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial with entertainment to follow in the Keystone State Auditorium. This will be a fun filled evening that you will not want to miss. Tickets are $20 per person and are available from any officer.
I have designated our second Stated Communication on September 24, Wardens' Night. Right Wor. George Harry Chapin, Deputy Grand Master of Masons in Virginia, will be speaking on the 1999 Grand Master's Program. Come out and support your Wardens' as they conduct the business of your Lodge.
Please read the resolution to the By-Laws and Standing Resolutions in the insert that was proposed at the August 20, Stated Communication. We will ballot on this resolution at our Second Communication on September 24.
NOTICE: We will be hosting Constitutional Lodge No. 294, Beverley, England, from October 6-10. Many of our guests will need to be hosted during this period. If you can open your home to these fine Brethren, please call Wor. Philip J. Hays at (703) 329-3028. You will not want to miss this opportunity to share with these Brethren and their wives from England. There will be a meeting for all hosts at 2:00 September 13, in the Lodge Room.
Sincerely and fraternally,
Philip J. Hays
Worshipful Master

Wor. Philip John Hays
Worshipful Master
Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22
Worshipful Master:
It is with sincere regret and apology that I must tender my resignation from the office of Senior Warden of the Alexandria-Washington Lodge, effective immediately. This decision comes after much personal anguish and debate, and mindful of the awkward position in which such action places yourself, the other line officers, and the Lodge as a whole.
This decision has been necessitated by the increasing demands of my job, and in no way should be taken as a reflection upon your able leadership or the qualifications of any of our other officers. It is a matter of managing my personal schedule and competing commitments, rather than any mark of dissatisfaction with the Lodge or its workings.
However, it is not my intention to simply resign my office and disappear from my Lodge. My current situation necessitates a substantial decrease in the demands on my time, but not a complete severance of my fraternal ties. As you are aware, I have already passed off to our Junior Warden all of the materials and preparations that I have made for the coming year, and I am pleased to see that he has already surpassed my work and is progressing along very well. I look forward to working with you and the rest of the Lodge in the coming months and years.
Again, I thank you and the Lodge for the trust that you have bestowed in me, and thank you for your understanding in this matter.
Respectfully and fraternally,
Joel Scott Armstrong
Senior Warden
