Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22

March 2008

Master's Message

Brethren,

Thank you for making our George Washington Birthday Celebration and the Reception of the Grand Master of Masons in Virginia such a success in February. I enjoyed seeing many of you at the wreath-laying and banquet that day.

We have a number of exciting developments and interesting presentations in Lodge in March. First, we will confer degrees on candidates at a Called Communication on Monday, March 3, and a second Called Communication on Tuesday, March 18. The catechism instructors and candidates are doing excellent work, and the line officers are conferring ritual to a high degree of excellence this year. I invite you to participate or assist as often and as much as you can.

Second, we will hear two first-rate presentations. At the Stated Communication on Thursday, March 13, Prof. Jessica L. Harland-Jacobs will discuss the historical relationship of Freemasonry and the British Empire, which will provide fascinating insights into the history of the Craft and its influential role in world history generally. At the Stated Communication on Thursday, March 27, our Illustrious Brother Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, 33rd, President Emeritus of The George Washington University, will join us and present a paper on a Masonic topic of interest.

We have important business to conduct at both Stated Communications in March as well. We will receive and discuss proposals for a Lodge Apron design at the first Stated Communication in March. Please bring your proposals as images or descriptions with as many details as you can provide as regards cost of production and possible suppliers. At the second Stated Communication, we will vote on the by-laws changes that were circulated with last month's Trestleboard, as well as the Lodge's nomination for District Deputy Grand Master for 2009 and 2010. There will be a Festive Board after both Stated Communications. Please reserve your space at the table by e-mailing the Senior Steward at dinner@aw22.com or by telephoning him at the number contained in this Trestleboard.

Finally, remember that on Saturday, April 5, the Lodge will travel to William L. Elkins Lodge No. 271, F. & A.M., holden under the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania for their traditional Ladies Night celebration. The banquet will be in the Grand Banquet room of the magnificent Masonic Temple on North Broad Street in Philadelphia. The Brethren of Elkins Lodge have arranged a tour of the Grand Lodge building for us as well. Please let me know by March 8 if you can join us on the trip. The Lodge has a special fund that pays for the travel and accommodation of Lodge Officers on this trip.

I have also enclosed for your review a brochure discussing a very special two-day course at the Scottish Rite Temple in Washington, D.C. this Spring. The course instructor Z'Ev ben Shimon Halevi is held in high regard by Wor. Bro. Kirk MacNulty, who gave such a meaningful presentation at Lodge in January. I highly recommend this enlightening course for all who can join me in attending.

Brethren, we are blessed to be part of this great Lodge. I look forward to seeing you in March.

Sincerely and Fraternally,
Douglas H. Wood
Worshipful Master
